Introduction
The premise for this game is a fusion of puzzle-solving, hidden-objects, mystery, and action-adventure in a pirate story that is simple enough to appeal to all age ranges, and while the game is clearly targeted at teens through adults, it has adequate appeal for gamers in the Tweens as well, though the setting and the macabre elements may be a bit much for younger gamers below the Tweens — just saying…
In Nightmares from the Deep you play as protagonist Sarah Black, owner of a museum whose daughter has been kidnapped by an undead pirate who you must pursue and capture in order to free your daughter from the waking nightmare in which she now lives! What seemed like a simple matter – find pirate, rescue daughter – becomes a lot more complicated once you uncover the clues and learn that the undead pirate is actually deeply entangled in a classic story of love and loss, being a key member of a centuries old love story, but that just scratches the surface of the story and the adventure to be had in Nightmares from the Deep: The Cursed Heart!

If you gathered from the descriptive paragraph above that there is a story to be found in this game and not simply a series of puzzles and hidden objects linked together by loading screens, why then you were paying attention! The thing about that is that it is so unusual to encounter a game in which the fusion of genres are built around a good story that when you do find one like that, it really stands out and earns praise. Such is the case here, but it is more than simply a coming together of an entertaining story and some fun puzzle and object challenges, it is a combination of immersive quality and care in plot development that leads to an ethereal sense of caring what happens to the characters you play and encounter in the game! The fact that we get to be entertained and that we can be genuinely enthusiastic about that process easily explains why this game earned the high marks that it does.
Without risking too many spoilers, as the game begins and the basic plot starts to unfold, you will find yourself working out a mystery within the mystery, and you will quickly realize that there are sub-plots to be found in the main story — a sure sign that something good is coming! Eventually it works out that the pirate wants to resurrect his mistress — possibly by robbing your daughter of her own young life force — but doing so will kill your daughter, and you cannot allow that to happen! You must act quickly to save her life before it is too late and the pirate succeeds in his quest…
As the circumstances of the story begin to unfold you have to be kicking yourself at the realization that you brought the threat that has now fulfilled its potential dangers right into the sanctum of your museum, so in a way you brought the curse upon yourself — if you believe in curses that is, but then you sort of have to start if you did not before, since this curse is playing out before your very eyes!

Saving your daughter means traveling through a richly detailed, vividly rendered series of locations — 45 in total which is massive for a game like this one — locations that range from haunted seas, ruined fortresses, and bone covered catacombs — and as you dig in to each location you quickly find that each can offer up its secrets to a willing and eager explorer — and you quickly begin to uncover the clues from the past that will help you to solve the current mystery and, if you are very lucky, the ancient one as well!
As we just pointed out, there are 45 locations in the game, 39 of which are hidden object areas, and joining that primary game play system is 16 mini-games that compliment both the story and the play style! The combination of a wide variety of areas and a wide variety of activities is bolstered by an impressive and beautifully rendered game world, in which your mood will rotate between serious and silly as a certain level of humor has been injected into this horror story to keep it from being all scare, no fun!
To succeed in your quest you will have to eventually track the undead pirate back to his pirate lair on supernatural Skull Island, where you will encounter not just a Pirate Lord but his undead crew as well, but it is the journey there in which most of the fun and surprises are found — and one of the most shocking surprises is the alternative play options that you encounter in the hidden object zones! You read that correctly — many of the hidden object zones have alternative play options, so in place of a deeply involved search session for hidden objects you can instead play one of the 16 mini-games like Mahjong, which if you are not familiar with that eastern tile game, well then you are in for a treat!
Gamers who are familiar with Hidden-objects games will already grasp that often when a quest item is located within the elements of an object room it is necessary to find all of the objects on the list — including the one or two that are part of the active quest — in order to obtain the ones that you desire for the active quest. By following the established traditions in the genre and mixing things up in a way that will challenge without frustrating even the younger players, the game does a very good job at maintaining the fun levels that are required for this type of play.
As with most of the really good games we end up experiencing the bulk of the tutorial as part of the main gameplay experience, and early on this takes the form of fetch and get missions like obtaining tools and other objects that are required to advance the story and complete the immediate set of quests that are active. While nobody is going to accuse this game of being overly complex or even difficult, it will also not earn a reputation for being too easy or for being too repetitive, as the development team managed to keep game place fresh and interesting even while they dealt with equipping the player with the basic set of skills required to play, and teaching them how to navigate through the world.
All in all the compromise between convenience and utility in game play for this title was accomplished without insulting the players intelligence, and keeping the process well within the reasonable bounds of the story — which earns the devs kudos and a cookie! How to get new minecraft update.
My Take
The first major strength that should be noted for this title is that unlike the vast majority of mobile hidden object games Nightmares from the Deep is not a game that you are going to sit down and play through in one session. It is a deep and involved game with a well-engineered plot and an engrossing story, and it was clearly designed and intended to be played in a series of relaxed sessions, and not in one long go!
Windows PC gamers will want to take note that there is a special Collector’s Edition that was released on their platform that is full of exclusive extras you won’t find in the standard version, including bonus game play elements, an integrated Strategy Guide, HD Wallpapers and concept art that you can use to decorate your desktop, and a stunning soundtrack.
The version of the game for the iPad includes Retina Display support, and support for the Game Center as well, which means that you will be able to track your progress and have limited bragging rights along the way!
After really giving the game a good workout and considering the fact that it genuinely sits at the top of the heap for its genre due to the quality of the effort that went in to creating it, it should not come as much of a surprise that the game earned a perfect 10 out of 10 from us. That is such a rare occurrence that I cannot remember the last mobile game that scored a 10, but this one did and it earned it!
With an average play time of around 25 hours thanks to the plethora of mini-games, Nightmares from the Deep gets an Average Admission Price of just .19 cents an hour for the standard edition and .27 cents an hour for the Collector’s Edition for iOS! For a modern mobile title those are impressive numbers and, thanks to the collection of mini-games this is a rare Hidden-objects game that actually has a very high replay score, which means you will not just play it once and then delete it, but you will likely keep it around so that you can replay them over and over again.
The iPad version of the game can be had via this link to the App Store with the full unlock being $6.99.
The iPhone version of the game can be had via this link to the App Store with the full unlock being $4.99.
For Windows PC and Mac players the game can be found on most digital distribution sites, and probably on your favorite one, so you should check to see ?
Parents: There is very little here to concern you other than the supernatural elements, and the whole ghosts and spirits thing. Language and content wise there is nothing to be had here that you do not find on daytime broadcast TV these days, though I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. This game is properly rated.
